The first assault rifle concept was developed by the Germans during World War II based on research that showed most firefights happen at close range, within 300 meters. The power and range of rifle cartridges at the time were too excessive for most small arm firefights and as a result, armies began to seek a cartridge and rifle that could combine submachine gun features with a mid-power rifle cartridge.
It was during this time that Russian tank commander Mikhail Kalashnikov was in the hospital recovering from injuries he received during the Battle of Bryansk. Determined to drive the Germans from his homeland, Kalashnikov began playing around with weapon designs. After creating a prototype for a submachine gun and later attending a technical school to gain more training, Kalashnikov finally designed the weapon he had always dreamed of; the Avtomat Kalashnikova 1947, more commonly known as the AK-47.
